The Styx pride corner a ‘dugga boy’

MalaMala Game Reserve - Buffalo

Buffalo by Shaun Walton

Andrew Batchelor shot this footage sometime in the winter of 2007. The hunt happened really quickly, with the whole thing taking 15 minutes from start to death. The Styx pride – which consisted of seven females back then – surrounded three ‘dugga boys’ (retired male buffalo) and chased them onto a firebreak. In the end the older one was cornered and taken down. The females’ eight cubs were waiting in the bushes for their Moms to call them to dinner.

This video just shows the actual kill, if you’d like to see them feeding click here. A heads-up to the squeamish and fainthearted, this is by no means easy viewing. That said, it is nature, so if you’re fascinated by the mechanics of the wild then you’ll probably find this interesting.

If the big cats blow your hair back then you might also enjoy Kinky-Tail roars into the night and the Charleston pride walk-by.

And remember, if you’ve visited MalaMala in the past and have some clips of your own that you’d like to share, why not send us the You-Tube link. You never know, you might just find yourself featured on Video Thursday.

Happy almost weekend folks, enjoy!
