It gives us great pleasure to announce the winner of the MalaMala Video of the Year for 2012.
This clip was all about being in the right place at the right time, and Martha van Rensburg raced to the front of the pack for her incredible clip of a leopard catching an impala in an acrobatic move.
The video was taken at MalaMala on Saturday the 29th of September 2012 at ± 7:50am on a GoPro Hero.
Said Martha, “I was on a photographic safari arranged by Greg du Toit, with Marius van Tonder and Ian Weatherburn. Our game ranger was Roan Ravenhill. We were on a game drive when we spotted a female leopard on the left hand side of the road not five metres from us. On the opposite side was a herd of impala. The wind was making the impala very skittish, but they failed to see the leopard. Then the jaws of death came swiftly for the unsuspecting impala as it galloped toward the feline predator. The leopard made a gigantic leap to ensnare the impala, flipping it high in the air. Once on the ground, the impala twitched as the leopard held tighter and dragged it away into a nearby donga. The barking impala continued to ring out through the bush.”
Congratulations Martha! We hope that you manage to be in the right time and place again when you visit Rattray’s on MalaMala to redeem your prize.
We have seen this clip a number of times, and still cannot get enough of it. And judging by the 4 million-odd viewers that it has attracted on YouTube, clearly we are not alone.
Thank you to all of the other entrants for submitting their clips. We will share some of these with you over the weeks to come.
